Tomahund Plantation Land Reclamation

Overview

Located in Charles City County, Virginia, Tomahund Plantation is approximately 1,000 acres and contains the largest gravel surface mining operation along the confluence of the Chickahominy and James Rivers.  250 acres are currently actively mined.

This gravel surface mining site is an effective location to study created wetland assimilative capacity regarding the removal of sediment and nutrients from active surface mining water.

"Wetland creation represents an important dynamic in the preservation of biodiversity and the reclaiming of habitat after commercial use."
