CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS MATRICULATING SUMMER OR FALL 2006:

                                  

LIBERAL LEARNING CURRICULUM – 46-48 credit hours

The liberal learning core contains the following three distinct areas of study.

BIOLOGY COURSE OPTIONS

Listing of courses offered

1.  Liberal Learning Foundations (18-20 credits)

    • First Year Seminar (ULLC 100 - 3 credits)
    • Written Communication Literacy (ENGL 123, ULLC 233 - 6 credits, no grade lower than C-)
    • Second Language Literacy (3 credits beyond 102)
    • Mathematical Literacy (Above Math 110 - 6-8 credits)

2.  Liberal Learning Areas of Inquiry (22 credits)

One course in the Area of Inquiry of your major discipline may be presented to satisfy an Area of Inquiry requirement; no more than seven credit hours from any single discipline may be taken to satisfy the Areas of Inquiry.  The seven hours in the Investigating the Natural World must include two lecture courses and one accompanying laboratory.

    • Western Traditions (3 credits)
    • Global and Multicultural Perspectives (3 credits)
    • Creative Expressions (3 credits)
    • Investigating the Natural World (7 credits)
    • Formal and Informal Reasoning (3 credits)
    • Identity, Institutions, and Societies  (3 credits)

3.  Liberal Learning Emphasis (6 credits)

At least 6 additional credits in one of the above Areas of Inquiry with at least 3 credits at the 300-level or higher.  Courses taken to satisfy the Liberal Learning Emphasis may not be in the department of the major or any discipline for which the major requires coursework at the 300-level or above.

WRITING INTENSIVE COURSE REQUIREMENT

Completion of two 300- or 400-level courses that are designated as Writing Intensive (WI).

In addition to successful completion of the Liberal Learning Curriculum and the Exit Examination in Biology, the Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology requires successful completion of the following courses.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS – 64-69 credit hours

(Some of these courses will fulfill requirements of the Liberal Learning Curriculum.)

1.  CHEM 103/103L-104/104L (Introductory Chemistry I and II and Labs)

2.  MATH 125 (Elementary Statistics); and MATH 130 (Elementary Functions & Analytic Geometry) or higher

3.  PHYS 151/151L-152/152L or PHYS 201/201L-202/202L

4.  Required BIOLOGY courses:  

    • The Tetrad - BIOL 151/151L (General Zoology), 152/152L (General Botany), 201/201L (Molecular & Cell Biology), 202/202L (Evolution and Ecology)
    • A junior level Writing Intensive course
    • BIOL 491W – Biology Senior Seminar (Writing Intensive)

5.  BIOLOGY ELECTIVES:  22 additional BIOL credits beyond the Tetrad with 19 of these at the 300-/400-level.  At least 4 of the courses used to satisfy these 19 credits must have a laboratory component.  Specific elective choices vary among different career goals and should be selected in consultation with your advisor.        

NOTE:  All 300-/400-level BIOL courses have BIOL 202/202L as prerequisites.  BIOL 151/151L, 152/152L, 201/201L, 202/202L, the junior level WI course, and 491W must be completed with a grade of C- or better.  Students may present no more than two grades below C- in BIOL courses.

 
CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS MATRICULATING PRIOR TO SUMMER 2006:

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology requires a minimum of 40 credits in Biology to be selected with the aid of the student’s departmental advisor.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

General Education courses as required by the University.

DEGREE STUDIES REQUIREMENTS

Completion of a foreign language through the 202-level OR six additional credits in the Humanities at or above the 200-level.

WRITING INTENSIVE COURSE REQUIREMENT

Completion of two 300- or 400- level courses that are designated as Writing Intensive (WI).

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

1. Required major courses: CHEM 103/103L-104/104L (Introductory Chemistry I and II and Labs); MATH 125 (Elementary Statistics); and MATH 130 (Elementary Functions & Analytic Geometry) or higher

2. Required Biology courses:

  • BIOL 107-108-109L (General Biology I and II and Lab)
  • BIOL 300WI – General Biology III for Majors (Writing Intensive)
  • BIOL 313 - Genetics
  • BIOL 307/307L (Cell Biology and Lab) or BIOL 414/414L (Biochemistry and Lab)
  • BIOL 491WI – Biology Seminar (Writing Intensive)
  • A botany course: BIOL 305/305L (Plant Anatomy and Lab); BIOL 308/308L (Plant Physiology and Lab); BIOL 310/310L (Plant Morphology and Lab); or BIOL 321/321L-322/322L (Plant Taxonomy I and II and Lab)
  • A zoology course: BIOL 309/309L (Embryology and Lab); BIOL 312/312L (Invertebrate Zoology and Lab); 314/314L (Anatomy & Physiology I and Lab); BIOL 320/320L (Natural History of the Vertebrates and Lab); BIOL 403/403L (Marine Biology and Lab); BIOL 409/409L (Comparative Anatomy and Lab); BIOL 418/418L (Animal Behavior and Lab); or 420/420L (Animal Physiology and Lab); BIOL 425/425L (Ornithology and Lab); BIOL 445/445L (Mammalogy and Lab)

3. Required Biology electives: 14 additional BIOL credits with 11 of these at the 300-400 level. At least two of the courses used to satisfy these 11 credits must have a laboratory component.

NOTE: BIOL 300W has prerequisites of 1) BIOL 107-108-109L, and 2) CHEM 103/103L or 121/121L, and 3) English 123. BIOL 313 has a pre- or corequisite of BIOL 300W.  Please consult the current Undergraduate Catalog for minimum grade requirements.
