Kathleen Brunke is a professor of chemistry and coordinates the chemistry degree program. She teaches organic chemistry, introductory chemistry, environmental chemistry and advanced organic chemistry. Her research is related to the chemistry of wetland plants and ion and gas chromotograph and other environmental areas.

AREAS OF RESEARCH
Dr. Brunke has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to enhance learning about the local environment through integration of Ion Chromatography (IC) into the undergraduate curriculum. IC will be introduced into General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Ecology, Instrumental Analysis, and Environmental Chemistry courses.
Projects involving Ion chromatography:
- Analysis of volatile fatty acids from porewater of wetland plants
- Bromate in well water
- Atmospheric nitrates and sulfate analysis
- Analysis of environmental samples
Projects involving Gas chromatography:
- Methane emission from wetland plants under high CO2 levels in a greenhouse setting
- Validation of Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) Experiment by Ground-Based Infrared Solar Spectroscopic Measurements of CO and CH4
- Methane Measurements from Wetland Plants under a Carbon Dioxide Enriched Environment
- Data Analysis of Atmospheric Aerosol Measurement from a Airborne Platform
