Biology 492

Undergraduate Research Experience

 

Undergraduate Research Experience is designed to provide the qualified student the opportunity for involvement in scientific research under the supervision of a departmental faculty member.  It is limited to the student’s major or minor field in which he has qualified himself by previous academic training. 

 

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of BIOL 300 OR BIOL 201/201L and 202/202L
  • Minimum 2.50 GPA
  • Junior or Senior standing in Biology, Environmental Science, or Ornamental Horticulture.

Plan of Study: 

The topic, goals, time-line/stages, deadlines for completion of stages, and criteria for evaluation are agreed upon in writing by the student and supervising instructor before the student can register for the course.  This is done at the time of pre-registration for the term in which the Undergraduate Research Experience is to be carried out. 

Credit Hours: 

The student can take 1 - 4 credit hours of Undergraduate Research Experience per term with a maximum of 4 credit hours in his total academic program.   A maximum of 6 credit hours from any combination of BIOL 492, BIOL 496, and BIOL 499 can be counted toward a degree.

Authorization Form:

1.  This form is to be completed in advance of each Undergraduate Research Experience undertaken by a student in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science.  Requirements are detailed on back of the Authorization Form.

2.  Distribute copies of the Authorization Form and the Plan of Study to: 

    • One copy must be filed with the department office.
    • One copy should be retained by the student.
    • One copy should be retained by the supervising professor.
    • The original Authorization Form, the Plan of Study, and an Add/Drop Form signed by the supervising professor must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar to enroll in the course.
