| The Pugh Award - Each year faculty of the department nominate graduating seniors who they feel best embody Dr. Jean E. Pugh's standards of scholarship and involvement. The award was established by the department in 1994 to honor Dr. Pugh, retired professor of Biology. Dr. Pugh came to Christopher Newport College in 1967 to chair and establish the Department of Biology. She guided the development of the department from its then two-year Associates Degree status into a full four-year program. Equally as important to her were students who were well-rounded and took an active part in the world around them as well as the happenings of their department. |

Hannah Spencer has been appointed one of 95 NOAA National Hollings Scholars 2006. The Hollings Scholarship is an award toward college tuition and a stipend for a 10-week internship in the summer between her junior and senior year. NOAA provides the Hollings Scholarship for students who plan a career that is NOAA related. The The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration "conducts research and gathers data about the global oceans, atmosphere, space and sun, and applies this knowledge to science and service." Brittney Zemp has been awarded an internship with the Bioengineering Department at Clemson University. Her primary work will include the design of smart injectable nanodevices based on covalent attachment of proteins to nanoparticles to prevent calcification of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals on vascular walls or on prosthetic devices (such as artificial heart valves).

Kara Segna wins First Place in the CNU Sigma Xi Undergraduate Poster Competion on November 4. Her poster presented her proteomics research on Pennicillium marneffei, an emerging fungal pathogen in Southeast Asia. She completed her research during a ten week summer 2005 internship for the biochemistry department, Youngstown State University, Ohio.

Laurie Lindquist (B.S., University of Virginia 2002; M.S. Environmental Science,
Christopher Newport University 2005) has been selected to The Environmental Protection Agency Intern Program (EIP). This program is an entry level program that familiarizes (paid) interns with the who, how, what, and where of the EPA. Laurie is one of 30 interns selected from a pool of 2200 applicants and will be working as a Biologist with the Water Management Division of EPA Region 4 based in Atlanta, GA. The 2006 EIP process will begin sometime in March . . . check out the EPA webpage to learn more about the program.

Whitney Carroll received a grant from the CNU Honors Council for the study of the relationship of remote sensing indices of carbon dioxide methane emissions of peatlands.
Aimee Gibbs, CNU Biology major, was named to the Verizon Academic All-District III Track and Cross Country Team. Aimee holds numerous cross country and track records. Aimee also won this year's female Student-Athlete of the Year. Gibbs finished her junior year holding nearly every CNU distance record. She has been the USA South Athletic Conference cross country champion and First Team All-Conference all three years. She is also the two-time reigning Mason-Dixon Conference champion.
Michelle Deschenes Bullis, Whitney Carroll, Aimee Gibbs, Valerie L. Johansen, Chrissy Ogura, Renee Raspanti, and Alexandra Athina Rowe who were inducted into Alpha Chi, the National Honor Scholarship Society, Virginia Zeta Chapter.
