Tomahund Plantation Land Reclamation

Process

Reclaiming the land consists of adding heavy clay fill and a layer of topsoil.  Water supply was readily available and soil conditions were ideal for creating a wetland.

Management consists of flooding in the fall and winter and drawing water down in the spring and summer to expose the seed bed.

Project Goals:

  • Get the hydrology right
    • To provide a variety of water depths to support high diversity of moist-soil plants for optimal waterfowl habitat.
  • Determine original landscape contour
  • Shape the land to provide optimal water depths
    • Three-equal-area elevational terraces
  • Choosing wetland plants with high nutrient content for waterfowl
